Four new custom field types to increase your asset management database

We're excited to announce that we have expanded our customizable asset fields functionality on Shelf. Based on user feedback, we've added new field types to give you even more flexibility to represent your unique assets and workflows.

The new custom field types available are:

  • Single line text
  • Multi line text
  • Option
  • Boolean
  • Date

Let's take a look at some use cases for each new field type within event production, tech and related industries:

Single Line Text

Allows input of a single short text value like a serial number, model number, or asset name. Good for uniformly formatted fields.

For example:

  1. Serial number
  2. Model number
  3. SKU code
  4. User name
  5. Venue/location

Multi Line Text

Allows longer form text input across multiple lines. Useful for notes, specifications, instructions or other detailed asset information.

For example:

  1. Equipment notes
  2. Configuration details
  3. Service history
  4. Setup instructions
  5. Return policy

Option

Presents a drop down selection from a predefined list of options. Good for categorizing assets by type, manufacturer, status etc in a standardized way.

For example:

  1. Equipment type (lighting, audio, etc)
  2. Rental period (day, week, month)
  3. Manufacturer
  4. Condition (new, used, refurbished)
  5. Repair status (open, in progress, closed)

Boolean

Provides a true/false or yes/no style checkbox selection. Useful for tracking simple binary states or conditions like in stock/out of stock.

For example:

  1. In stock
  2. Calibrated
  3. Insured
  4. Tagged
  5. Under warranty

Date

Allows selection of a specific date value. Helpful for capturing timestamps of events associated with an asset over time, like purchase/install dates, calibration schedules, warranty info.

For example:

  1. Purchase date
  2. Installation date
  3. Next calibration date
  4. Insurance expiration
  5. Warranty expiration

We hope these new field types give you even more power to customize Shelf for your specific asset management needs. As always, please let us know if you have any other suggestions to improve the product!
