Push Notifications on Shelf Companion

Get a push on your phone when a booking you hold is reserved, changed, due or overdue, when you are assigned an audit, and when an asset reminder names you. How to turn push on, which kinds you can switch off, and which plans include it.

Shelf Companion can send a push to your phone for the things that are about you: a booking you are the custodian of, an audit you are assigned to, and an asset reminder that names you. Tap the push and the app opens that booking, audit or asset, even when it belongs to another of your workspaces.

Push needs Shelf Companion 1.7.0 or later on iPhone, iPad or Android, and a paid plan (see Which plans include push). Push never replaces email: every email described in Which Emails Shelf Sends, and When keeps arriving as before.

Turn Push On

  1. Update Shelf Companion from the App Store or Google Play if it is older than 1.7.0.
  2. In the app, open Settings → Notifications.
  3. Tap Turn on notifications and allow notifications when your phone asks.

The app only asks for permission when you tap that button, never on its own. If you declined earlier, the screen says notifications are off for Shelf in your phone's settings and offers Open Settings, so you can allow them there.

Do this on every phone you want pushes on. Signing out of the app stops pushes to that phone.

What You Get a Push For

KindYou get a push when
BookingsA booking you are the custodian of is reserved, updated, extended, shortened, cancelled, sent back to draft, deleted or checked in; before it is due to go out and before it is due back; and when it is overdue. You also get one when a booking is handed to you, or taken away from you.
AuditsYou are assigned to an audit, before it is due, and when an audit you are assigned to or created is overdue.
Stock and remindersAn asset reminder that includes you comes due.

Three rules decide who is pushed:

  • Only the custodian gets booking pushes. The booking creator, the always-notify list, extra per-booking recipients and the owners, administrators and managers who hear about new reservations still get their emails, but no push. Who gets those emails is set in Booking Notification Settings.
  • You are never pushed about your own action. Reserve or extend your own booking and the app stays quiet.
  • Push follows the same timing as email. A checkout reminder pushes when the checkout reminder email is sent, and so on. The fixed times are in Which Emails Shelf Sends, and When.

Choose Which Pushes You Get

Open Settings → Notifications in the app, or Account settings → Notifications on the web. Both show the same switches:

  • Push notifications pauses every push at once. Your choices below it are kept for when you turn it back on.
  • Bookings, Audits and Stock and reminders turn one kind off on its own.

The switches belong to you, not to a phone, so a change applies to every phone you are signed in on. They silence push only; your emails do not change.

Which Plans Include Push

Push is included in the Plus, Team and Enterprise plans. It is not part of the Free plan. What counts is the plan of the workspace the booking, audit or reminder belongs to, checked when the push is sent: if you belong to a Team workspace and a free personal workspace, you get pushes for the Team workspace only.

When none of your workspaces includes push, Settings → Notifications says Push notifications are not included in your workspaces' plans. The app itself stays free on every plan. See Pricing.

Troubleshooting

  • No push arrives. Check that the app is 1.7.0 or later, that Settings → Notifications shows the switches (not the Turn on notifications button), and that the kind is switched on. Then check your phone's own notification settings for Shelf.
  • "This phone isn't connected for notifications yet." The phone could not register. Tap Try again on that notice.
  • "Push notifications aren't available." You are signed in to a Shelf server that does not support push yet, such as an older private server. Email keeps working.
  • A teammate wants pushes for every booking. Booking pushes only go to the custodian. Add the teammate to the always-notify list in Settings > Bookings for the emails instead.
