Require the Explicit Check-out Flow

A workspace can now make Admins or Self-service users scan or select the assets to check a booking out, instead of handing the whole booking over in one click.
Shelf has had an Explicit check-in requirement for a while: switch it on and a role has to scan the gear back in rather than closing the booking with one click. There was no twin for the other direction, so a workspace that wanted every departure verified could only ask people nicely.
Now there is one. Settings ▸ Workspace settings ▸ Bookings carries a second card, Explicit check-out requirement, with a switch for Admins and a switch for Self-service users. Both start off, and only the workspace owner can change them.
What a covered role sees
The one-click hand-out goes away, on every surface:
- On the booking page, the check-out control offers only Scan to check out. Check out on a Reserved booking and Check out remaining on an Ongoing or Overdue one are not shown.
- In the Shelf Companion app, Check Out All Assets is hidden. Select to Check Out stays.
- A request that reaches the server anyway is refused, with the reason spelled out rather than a generic failure.
Everything that already makes you name the items stays open: the Scan to check out scanner, Actions ▸ Check out selected items on the booking's asset list, Select to Check Out on the phone, and fulfil-and-check-out on both.
Who it reaches
The owner is always exempt, and Base users are not covered because they cannot check gear out in the first place. Someone who holds more than one role on a workspace is judged by their most privileged one, so a person who is both Self-service and Administrator is governed by the Admin switch.
The check-in and check-out requirements are independent. Either can be on while the other is off, and each can apply to one role and not the other.
The phone half of this reached devices over the air on 15 September 2026. An older copy of the app still shows Check Out All Assets; tapping it gets the refusal and nothing is checked out.
